Introduction
People often misunderstood what Faith really is. So many people focus on their own strength of faith rather than the ability of the One (Jesus) they are trusting. In Matthew 8:5-13, we encounter a Roman centurion whose faith stands out not because it was emotional or loud, but because it was anchored in Jesus’ authority and ability.
This passage confronts weak, self-centered faith and redirects us to a stronger foundation: confidence in who Jesus is and what He can do.
“Lord, I am not worthy that You should come under my roof. But only speak a word, and my servant will be healed.”
Matthew 8:8
Understanding the Faith of the Centurion
The centurion was not a Jew. He was a Roman officer, an outsider to the covenant. Yet, he demonstrated a level of faith that amazed Jesus.
What made his faith different?
- He Recognized Authority
The centurion understood authority because he operated under it daily.
For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me. And I say to this one, Go! And he goes; and to another, Come! And he comes; and to my servant, Do this! And he does it.
Matthew 8:9
He saw Jesus not just as a teacher or healer, but as one who had divine authority over sickness. He believed that Jesus did not need physical presence; His word alone was enough.
This is critical:
Faith begins when you recognize who Jesus truly is.
2. He Trusted Jesus’ Ability, Not His Own Worthiness
The centurion said clearly: “I am not worthy…” He did not approach Jesus based on merit, works, or status. He approached based on Jesus’ ability.
Many people struggle here. They ask: “Am I good enough?” “Have I prayed enough?” “Do I deserve this?”
The centurion removed himself from the equation. His faith rested entirely on Jesus. True faith is not confidence in yourself; it is confidence in Christ.
3. He Believed in the Power of the Word
“Only but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed.” Matthew 8:8b
This is a deep revelation. The centurion believed that Jesus’ spoken word carried authority to heal at a distance. He did not need a physical touch, a special environment, or a visible sign.
He trusted the Word. This challenges modern believers who depend heavily on what they can see or feel. Faith must rise above sensory dependence.
Jesus’ Response: Faith That Marvels
Jesus responded with astonishment:
When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.
Matthew 8:10
This is one of the few times Scripture records Jesus marveling at someone’s faith. Why? Because the centurion understood: Authority, Grace, and the power of the Word. And he aligned his belief accordingly.
The Result: Immediate Manifestation
“And his servant was healed that same hour.” Matthew 8:13 The miracle happened instantly, without Jesus entering the house. This proves that distance, circumstances, or limitations do not restrict Jesus’ power.
What to Learn in these Lessons
- Shift Your Focus to Jesus’ Ability: Stop measuring your faith by feelings. Start measuring it by your confidence in Jesus.
- Remove Self-Reliance: Faith grows when self-dependence dies. You are not the source; Jesus is.
- Stand on the Word: God’s Word is enough. You don’t need extra signs to believe.
- Understand Spiritual Authority: When you understand who Jesus is, doubt loses its grip.
Why This Message Matters Today
Many believers live in frustration, not because Jesus is unable, but because their faith is misplaced. They trust in their emotions, circumstances, and performance. The centurion shows a better way: Trust Jesus completely. In a generation filled with noise and distractions, this kind of faith is rare, but it is powerful.
How to Build A Great Faith Like the Centurion
- Don’t Read But Study who Jesus is: Build your faith on revelation, not assumption.
- Speak the Word: Align your mouth with what God has said.
- Reject doubt-driven thinking: Don’t let circumstances define the truth of God’s Word or promises.
- Depend fully on Christ: Shift from self to Savior
The faith of the centurion is not just a story; it is a standard. Jesus is still looking for believers who trust His authority, rely on His word, and believe in His ability without conditions. The question is direct: Are you placing your faith in your situation or in Jesus’ ability? Do you truly believe that Jesus can act without physical evidence? Is your faith based on feelings or on God’s Word? Where have you been trusting yourself instead of Christ?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, I shift my faith from myself to You. I trust in Your authority and Your ability. Help me to believe Your Word without doubt and to rely fully on Your power. Strengthen my faith so that I may walk in confidence, knowing that You are able in all things. Amen.
